On Aug. 23, 1963, the first section of the Antelope Valley Freeway opened between Canyon Country and Acton, offering a four-lane alternative to the heavily traveled Sierra Highway. A dedication ceremony at Sand Canyon drew about 2,500 people, and the route later expanded north toward Palmdale, Lancaster and Mojave, becoming today’s State Route 14.
