On Aug. 22, 1891, 17-year-old Lou Henry, who later became First Lady Lou Henry Hoover, was photographed with a rifle atop a donkey outside Acton storekeeper Richard E. Nickel’s general store. The National Archives preserves the image, taken during Henry’s summer camping trip near Mount Gleason, while Nickel was also establishing himself as Acton’s postmaster, hotel owner and newspaper publisher.
