June 8, 1851, marks the birth of Henry Clay Needham, a Kentucky native and prominent prohibitionist who played a major role in the early development of Newhall and the Santa Clarita Valley. A former Kansas mayor and author of the state’s “Dry” law, Needham helped establish the St. John Subdivision as a prohibitionist colony, built businesses and churches in Newhall, and remained active in politics and temperance efforts throughout his life. His former ranch land later became home to Eternal Valley Cemetery, portions of the Antelope Valley Freeway and, most recently, the Needham Ranch industrial park completed in 2024.
