The Castaic Range War began on Feb. 28, 1890, when a violent clash over disputed land claims in Castaic Cañon left two men, Dolores Cook and George Walton, dead. The confrontation stemmed from overlapping railroad land grants and a bitter rivalry between ranchers William Wirt Jenkins and William C. Chormicle. Although Chormicle and an associate were acquitted after a lengthy trial, the feud continued for decades, ultimately claiming more than 20 lives.
