Help Wanted: Senior Tutor
POSITION SUMMARY:
Reporting to the Tutoring Center Manager or her/his designee, the Senior Tutor is responsible for all activities related to setting up and teaching SAT/ACT and other courses offered, running day-to-day operations of the tutoring center, and for providing tutoring services in Math and other subjects as necessary to children in grades K – 12, college students and adults. The Senior Tutor’s primary responsibilities will be to provide tutoring services, teach SAT/ACT classes and all other future courses offered, champion available programs to parents, create and maintain files, records, reports, collect and track payments and data, handle cash fund, schedule and supervise center’s staff, maintain and update the weekly tutoring schedule, adhere to all tutoring center policies and procedures, as well as, developing positive relationships with clients (students and parents), growing the business for the tutoring center and work at times in a fast-paced environment.
The Senior Tutor must be able to work later evening hours (until 8:30pm), Saturdays (9:00am to 6:00pm), and on Sundays when a SAT/ACT course is offered. The Senior Tutor must be able to support three or more tutoring centers and be able to travel to support additional tutoring centers when necessary.
The Senior Tutor is regarded as a representative of the company and must consistently exhibit outstanding customer service, professionalism, a sensitivity to the needs of each child/student and interact, in-person and over the telephone, with all parents and pupils in a consistent positive, helpful and courteous manner at all times.
RESPONSIBILITIES/DUTIES: Note, this list is illustrative only and is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all tasks performed by this position.
• Supervises day-to-day operations of a tutoring center and provides tutoring in Math and other subjects as necessary to children in grades K – 12, college students and adults.
• Ability to work later evening hours, Saturdays and Sundays.
• Adhere to attendance policies and schedules a substitute employee in your absence, upon approval of the Tutoring Center Manager or her/his designee.
• Supervise and schedule center staff to meet client servicing needs and to best control center labor costs. Make hiring requests to the Tutoring Center Manager as necessary. Track, document and report in unacceptable staff conduct to the Tutoring Center Manager or her/his designee and participate in any staff counseling and evaluating sessions required.
• Opens and prepares the center for use by students and staff, sets-up tutoring and SAT/ACT, etc. classrooms daily, reconfigures room/space back to its original design daily and closes the center. Must have the ability to safely lift and move objects that weigh 75 pounds.
• Ensures that all center resources/curriculum, supplies, etc. are kept stocked and stored properly, and that all equipment is operational.
• Maintains professional manners/appearance and a cooperative, professional relationship with all personnel/administrators, children, parents and any others as related to performing center services and duties at all times.
• Provides an outstanding learning environment and customer service at all times and monitors that the other staff is also consistently providing all clients with excellent service.
• Demonstrates patience, sensitivity, encouragement, and an acute ability to listen and build a relationship of mutual respect with parents, children and staff.
• Possesses excellent verbal/written communication, organizational, and analytical skills.
• Ability to work independently with minimal direction and management.
• Makes required outbound telephone calls for the center. Answers all incoming telephone calls or in-person visits in a positive, friendly manner, provides accurate information to parents/clients and sells (closing required) tutoring and other center services offered.
• Tracks interested parents contact information and makes semi-monthly phone calls to these interested parents to persuade them to sign-up their child for center services. Contacting interested parents may also require e-mailing and sending typed letters.
• Contacts and tracks students, parents and staff to verify service appointments, attendance, request payment(s), sell services, etc. and maintains and updates the weekly tutoring schedules.
• Resolve any scheduling issues among tutors and students. Must attempt to schedule students at their requested times as best as possible and regardless of possible changes in the tutoring staffs’ schedules.
• Monitor that the students are receiving exceptional tutoring and that center curriculum delivery methods are utilized. Ensure and assist the educational staff, parents, and students with frequent progress reports and recommendations. Will also relay information from a student’s parent to the student’s tutor.
• Assists in the hiring, training, development and motivation of center staff. Will need to provide written reports/updates to tutors as necessary informing them of center changes.
• Monitors and tracks staff and tutoring center performance, revenues, expenses and payment collection. Engages in marketing activities.
• Safeguards the security and handling of client services payments and the center’s cash fund. Adheres to all tutoring center operating policies and procedures.
• Creates and maintains files, data, records, reports, materials, correspondence, handles staff timesheets and performs other administrative work related to center functions.
• Knowledgeable in the use of standard MS office computer programs and has the ability to learn a variety of educational software programs used by the center.
• Conduct pre and post assessment testing using established systems to identify each child’s educational needs.
• Writes Instructional Packets for the subjects of Math, ELA, etc. for grade levels K-12 and other curriculum according to guidelines and parameters established by the Tutoring Center Manager or her/his designee.
• Attend all staff meetings and professional developments/training sessions as required.
• Able to travel and work at other tutoring centers frequently, as required.
• Perform other duties as needed or assigned.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
• Finger Dexterity; using primarily just the fingers to make small movements such as typing, using calculator, picking up small objects, or pinching fingers together. In addition, must be able to handle a high volume of paperwork, which will involve filing, faxing, and making copies, etc.
• Talking; especially where one must convey detailed or important instructions or ideas accurately, with clarity, loudly, or quickly and for a lengthy period of time.
• Average Hearing; able to hear average or normal conversations in-person and over the telephone, and receive ordinary information.
• Visual Abilities; good acuity necessary to constantly view the computer monitor, prepare or inspect documents or operate office machinery.
• Physical Strength; some sedentary work. Must be able to exert or lift up to 75 lbs. of force daily when reconfiguring classroom (moving student desks, chairs and equipment), etc.
• Frequent multi-tasking, changing of task priorities, and tedious, exacting work required.
• Working in a noisy, distracting environment with frequent deadline pressures.

EDUCATION/EXPERIENCE DESIRED:
• Bachelor’s Degree in Math, Science, English or Liberal Arts preferred. Or at least 3 years of college.
• Chemistry experience desirable
• Valid California Teaching Credential or current Substitute Teaching Credential
• Minimum of 3+ years experience in successfully tutoring students. Exceptional written and verbal (presentation) communication skills.
• Must have 2+ years of experience teaching SAT and ACT courses and knowledge in Mathematics, Science, Language Arts including critical reading, essay writing, grammar/sentence structure, vocabulary, etc. Must successfully complete the center’s SAT and ACT Instructor training program.
• Ability to manage a classroom and prioritize student needs and other center job responsibilities.
• Ability to develop positive and strong relationships with clients and staff.
• Solid business acumen, problem solving and organizational skills and attention to details.
• Strong computer skills in Microsoft Office and ability to learn new systems.
• Ability to multitask and work in a fast paced environment.
